Surgical Repertoire

Proctology

This is the surgical science of looking after the rectum and anus.

Problems often require specialist assessment and treatment. Once an understanding is made of the underlying pathology, treatment is usually straightforward. Most disorders respond well to simple lifestyle modification. Surgery can help in some cases.

Bowel resection

Disease processes like colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and diverticular disease can alter the ability of the bowel to function well.

One option to treat diseases of the small and large bowel, is excisional surgery.

Different diseases are treated in a nuanced fashion, with each treatment tailored to both patient and disease process.

Hernia repair

Weakness of the abdominal wall can allow protrusion of abdominal contents. This can cause unpleasant symptoms of pain and obstruction.

Management depends both on the underlying cause, and any previous treatment.

Common Conditions - Advice

Constipation

The inability to pass a satisfying stool affects most people from time to time, and normally settles. For those who have repeated episodes, this can store up problems for the future.

Stomas

Some surgeries create artificial bowel openings through the abdominal wall, known as stomas. Learn more about stomas, how to live well with a stoma, and how to manage common problems.

Pruritis Ani

An itchy skin condition around the anus, causing distress. Treatment will depend on the cause.
